À l'hiver 2023 (voir photos plus bas), j'ai gravi Cannon via Hi-Cannon trail (Terrifying25) et retour via Kinsman Ridge Trail et via Lonesome Lake Trail. Une montée exigeante mais magnifique. La portion des escaliers de Hi-Cannon à nécessité l'usage d'un piolet. La descente via Kinsman Ridge Trail s'est avérée très périeuse en raison d'un manque de prise / végétation pour assurer une descente sécuritaire dans la portion très escarpée.
Au printemps 2022, j'ai effectué une boucle de 20 km dans le sens horaire en empruntant les sentiers Lonesome Lake Trail, Cascade Brook Trail, Fishin' Jimmy Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail et retour via Lonesome Lake Trail.
Sur les 2 premiers km, la montée progressive non négligeable sur Lonesome Lake Trail sera sans grande difficulté technique et vous mènera jusqu'au Lonesome Lake. Vous aurez déjà gagnez presque 300 m de D+. Vous devrez prendre à gauche à l'intersection pour emprunter Cascade Brook Trail et traverserez un pont pour aller rejoindre Lonesome Lake Hut. Cette immense cabane est un endroit agréable où prendre une pause. Vous poursuivrez ensuite en empruntant Fishin' Jimmy Trail afin d'aller rejoindre les monts Kinsman. Profitez du prochain 1,5 km qui sera plutôt plat car la montée vers Kinsman North sera assez soutenue au travers de grosses roches et racines. À l'intersection, il vous faudra prendre à gauche sur Kinsman Ridge Trail. Il y aura plusieurs magnifiques vues durant votre montée, ainsi qu'un point de vue sur cap rocheux offrant un incroyable panorama sur les monts Lafayette, Lincoln, Haystack, Liberty et Flume.
Vous apercevrez également le sommet du mont Kinsman South. Il semblera très loin, mais rassurez vous, il ne vous faudra qu'environ 30 minutes pour parcourir le 1,6 km nécessaire. Arrivés, assurez-vous de marcher 200 m supplémentaires pour aller rejoindre le "Kinsman Throne", un cairn en forme de chaise. Cet endroit offre une bien meilleure vue. Par exemple, à l'ouest se trouvent Camel's Hump et Mount Mansfield dans le Vermont.
Vous devrez faire demi-tour, après South Kinsman pour revenir jusqu'à l'intersection avec Fishin' Jimmy Trail. De là, vous resterez sur Kinsman Rigde Trail pour affronter le côté vallonneux des Cannons Balls. La promenade entre Cannon et Kinsman a été l'une des plus belles traversées de l'arrière-pays que j'ai vécues, semblable à celle entre Liberty et Flume. La mousse semble couler dans la montagne comme de l'eau dans certaines zones, je n'ai vu presque personne et cela ressemblait à une nature sauvage totale. Les haut et les bas dans cette section, ainsi que l'accumulation importante de neige ont ralenti considérablement le rythme puisqu'il m'a fallut redoubler de vigilance pour rester sur le monorail. Il y a environ 4,8 km (3 miles) entre le sommet de Cannon et North Kinsman. Il y aura quelques vues partielles pour briser la monotonie de ce couvert forestier. Vous croiserez également l'intersection pour le chemin du retour via Lonesome Lake Trail. À partir de ce point, préparez-vous, la montée vers Cannon est très escarpée et sera très glacée au printemps. Sur 1 km (0.6 mile) vous devrez gravir 204 m d'altitude dans une portion de sentier très rocheuse jusqu'au belvédère avant le sommet. Ajoutez ensuite 500 m pour atteindre le sommet avec sa tour imposante. Il vous sera possible d'y monter pour avoir une vue à 360 degrés. Ici aussi, vous apercevrez les monts Lafayette, Lincoln, Haystack, Liberty et Flume qui seront beaucoup plus près. Derrière se trouve Washington.
Faites ensuite demi-tour pour retourner à l'intersection croisée précédemment. Le retour via Lonesome Lake Trail se voudra une descente progressive sans grande difficulté technique. Plutôt agréable. Il y aura plusieurs passerelles dans la portion marécageuse près du lac.
J'ai trouvé cette randonnée exigeante, mais très agréable. Une belle découverte !

In the winter of 2023 (see photos ) I climbed Cannon via Hi-Cannon trail (Terrifying25) and back via Kinsman Ridge Trail and via Lonesome Lake Trail. A demanding but magnificent climb. The portion of the Hi-Cannon stairs required the use of an ice axe. The descent via Kinsman Ridge Trail proved to be very perilous due to a lack of grip/vegetation to ensure a safe descent down the very steep portion.
In the spring 2022, I did a 20 km loop hike clockwise via Lonesome Lake Trail, Cascade Brook Trail, Fishin' Jimmy Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail and back via Lonesome Lake Trail.
On the first 2 km, the significant gradual climb on Lonesome Lake Trail will be without great technical difficulty and will take you to Lonesome Lake. You will have already gained almost 300 m of D+. You will need to take a left at the intersection to take Cascade Brook Trail and cross a bridge to reach Lonesome Lake Hut. This huge cabin is a nice place to take a break. You will then continue along Fishin' Jimmy Trail to reach the Kinsman Mountains. Enjoy the next 1.5 km which will be quite flat as the climb to Kinsman North will be quite steep through large rocks and roots. At the intersection, you will need to take a left onto Kinsman Ridge Trail. There will be several magnificent views during your climb, as well as a rocky cape viewpoint offering an incredible panorama of Mounts Lafayette, Lincoln, Haystack, Liberty and Flume.
You will also see the summit of Mount Kinsman South. It will seem very far, but rest assured, it will only take you about 30 minutes to cover the necessary 1.6 km. When you arrive, be sure to walk another 200m to reach the "Kinsman Throne", a cairn in the shape of a chair. This place offers a much better view. For example, to the west are Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield in Vermont.
You will need to turn around, past South Kinsman back to the intersection with Fishin' Jimmy Trail. From there you will stay on Kinsman Rigde Trail to tackle the hilly side of the Cannons Balls. The walk between Cannon and Kinsman was one of the most beautiful backcountry drives I've experienced, similar to the one between Liberty and Flume. The moss seems to flow down the mountain like water in some areas, I saw hardly anyone and it looked like total wilderness. The ups and downs in this section, as well as the significant accumulation of snow slowed the pace considerably since I had to be extra vigilant to stay on the monorail. It is approximately 4.8 km (3 miles) from the top of Cannon to North Kinsman. There will be a few partial views to break up the monotony of this forest cover. You will also cross the intersection for the way back via Lonesome Lake Trail. From this point be prepared, the climb to Cannon is very steep and will be very icy in the spring. Over 1 km (0.6 mile) you will have to climb 204 m in altitude on a very rocky section of trail to the belvedere before the summit. Then add 500m to reach the top with its imposing tower. You will be able to climb there to have a 360 degree view. Here too, you will see Mounts Lafayette, Lincoln, Haystack, Liberty and Flume which will be much closer. Behind is Washington.
Then turn around to return to the intersection crossed previously. The return via Lonesome Lake Trail will be a gradual descent without great technical difficulty. Rather pleasant. There will be several footbridges in the marshy portion near the lake.
I found this hike challenging, but very enjoyable. A great discovery!
